WANT TO BE A MODEL?

Over the next few days, I will give you the inside scoop into the modelling world.

How to start, basic photo posing tips and tips from top South African models...

Keep in mind that the modelling industry is not all GLAM and FAME.
Modeling is an extremely competitive industry and is filled with allot of rejection and hard work.
But as in every industry, starting off is always going to be tough.

Don't take it personally, the 'Agencies", 'Clients' and 'Brands' are looking for a certain 'look' and if you don't have that particular 'look' then you will be rejected.

Stay confident, yet humble and move on to the next Agency or casting, until you hit the right one.

Most models only hit their fist job after months of casting.
Those that succeed are those that push through...
Anyone can be a model! You just have to find your particular Market.

You don't have to be pencil thin to become a model, this is a miss-perception.
The modelling industry is open to everyone, all body types and sizes.

Be honest with yourself, and decide if you have "what it takes" to be a model and if you are serious about modelling.
It takes a specific personality to become a model.

*The key ingredient is confidence and believing in yourself.
Always be professional, courteous, outgoing, enthusiastic and have a positive attitude.
AND STAY HUMBLE!

Here are the basic steps to becoming a working model.

 

STEP 1: GROOM YOURSELF:

• Take care of your appearance and health!
• Nails are important, keep them neat!Your nails could be the difference between nailing a job or not. literally
• Shiny, healthy hair is important. Opt for salon hair products or those recommended by salons.

*ELEGANCE HAIR SALON in Durbanville do regular treatments to my hair to keep my hair healthy from all the sun,sea and product exposure.

• Fitness is important. Make sure you are in your best, most comfortable shape.Feeling good subconsciously will ooze off you natural BEAUTY! No matter what your size. 

*If you have the money then opt to get a personal trainer who has worked with models.
*I will be launching my 'SUPER MODEL FITNESS DVD'  and diet soon, so hold tight!

•  Keep your skin healthy and go for regular facials and treatments.

*If its to expensive then just get a basic cleanser, toner and cream. This is a must!!!

•  Sunblock! Keep your face out of the sun and apply at least a SPF 50. No one wants to work with a sun exposed face. 

*I use EXFOLIAC MATIFYING SUNCARE FLUID, which has a matt effect and is perfect for photos (no shiny,greasy face) and its dermopurifying.

•  Drink plenty of water, stay rehydrated!

STEP 2: FIND YOUR MARKET:

Where do you fall under?

• SPORTS MODEL: Athletically built, lean and toned.
• PLUS SIZE: If your body is full and curvy.Most wear over a size 10.
• RUNWAY/CATWALK: tall, very skinny.

Woman are usually  5'9" and 6" tall (175 cm to 183 cm) or taller.

Extremely thin, 32-36" (81-91 cm) bust, 22-25" (56-64 cm) waist and 33-36" (84-91 cm) hips.

• PRINT MODEL: Beautiful face and body.
• UNDERWEAR/SWIMSUIT MODEL: Women have large breasts and small hips. Men have broad shoulders and small waists.
• COMMERCIALS: More diverse. Its more the girl next look, as in the TV adverts.
• BEAUTY: Perfect, clean, glowing skin and a beautiful face.
• HIGH FASHION: Vogue type models.

NOTE: You may fall under more than one market..

STEP 3:  PORTFOLIO/MODEL BOOK:

 A model’s portfolio is incredibly important. This is used to present the model to potential employers and agencies.

*Now that you know your market, keep tear-outs or prints of models that you like, in your market. Keep this as a reference for when you shoot your portfolio.

Hire a professional photographer that can put together varies shots for your book. Its a worthwhile investment! It does after all make or break the job...

As you succeed,you will replace your photos with magazine tear-outs.
This is how you portfolio will grow.

A portfolio has; head shots from different angles, a decent amount of smiling shots and straight-faced shots.
Some full-length shots. Some agencies prefer these to be swimsuit shots but it depends on your market, it can vary.

STEP 4: KNOW YOUR STATS:

Know your clothing measurements such as dress size, hip, waist, chest.
Know your hair color, eye color, skin tone, height, weight, and shoe size.
Print this with your portfolio.

STEP 5: JOIN AN AGENCY:

Research agencies that focus on the market you’re interested in.
*Possibly google a 'look' and model you are similar too and find out which agency he/she is with.

Once your appointment is set, take your portfolio along.
*Keep in mind not to over makeup, they want to see you as natural as possible.

They will often ask you to walk or pose for them.
*Do this confidentially.
They may take a head shot and a full length shot (Polaroids) and your measurements as well.

 If they reject you, don't get put off. Often agencies are looking for diverse models, and you may not fall under this, at that given time.
Set another appointment and move on.

 

STEP 6:  Z-CARD:

Once you have signed with a agency, they will compile a Z-card. This your entry ticket into the modelling world!
This will display your top photos, stats and agency detail.

STEP 7: CASTING:

Your agency will list you under a particular market.
When a casting calls for your 'look' then it's your time to strut your stuff!

*Find out what the commercial or advert requires and then try dress the part of the character.

Take your Z-card and Portfolio along.
The clients will page through your book.
Your agency will then contact you if you have the job!

WARNINGS!!!!!:

 Don't fall for scams:

• Don't join an agency over the Internet or Facebook!
• Make sure that the photographer is legit and don't go alone, or be shy to take a parent with while shooting your portfolio.
• There are many hoax scams out there. BE CAREFUL!

*Don't be pressured to take photo's you are uncomfortable with.

• Do your research and make sure that the agency is legit before you sign anything.

*READ THROUGH YOUR CONTRACTS!
